With all the hype out there on what you should and shouldn’t eat it can be hard to figure out what a healthy pregnancy diet is and what are the proper foods to eat when pregnant. Often when talking to your OB/GYN you can get different advice than what you would get from your primary doctor. Here we are going to offer a few basics about proper pregnancy nutrition. A healthy pregnancy diet is essential for the development of your growing baby. This type of diet ensures normal fetal growth and development, healthy uterine functions, healthy placenta and amniotic fluid. On the other hand, a poor pregnancy diet increases the possibilities of mortality, low birth weight, miscarriage, and a wide range of developmental disorders.

First let’s get rid of the notion that “diet” means restriction or to lose weight. Medically speaking, the word “diet” simply refers to the foods you consume on a daily basis. In terms of pregnancy nutrition it means that within your list of foods to eat when pregnant, you are going to need to make sure that you are getting enough high quality proteins and dairy, grains and nuts, fruits and veggies, bone broths, high quality fat , filtered water, fish oils and lacto-fermented foods.

These types of foods will help ensure that your baby is getting all the nutrients he or she needs. These nutrients include calcium, iron, zinc, B vitamins, copper, magnesium, vitamins A, C and D, folate and cholesterol to name a few. Also, you should be taking prenatal vitamins which will help give an extra boost to the nutrients you are consuming with a healthy pregnancy diet. These vitamins and minerals help with brain development, eye, heart, lung, bone and all other organ and tissue development of the baby.

Eating this way will help you gain a healthy amount of weight for your baby and will mean having less to lose after giving birth. Choosing Healthy Diet Food

The number one key factor in the success of a new diet is whether or not you can keep the diet consistent. You may find plenty of diets that help you lose weight, but you are going to fail 100% of the time that you cannot sustain your diet. Your success really depends on your ability to sustain your diet – potentially for the rest of your life. If you don’t think that you can possibly continue your diet for many many years without any breaks, it is probably not the right diet for you. It is best to do some searching and find something that you can sustain.

There are plenty of diets out there, from low carb to raw food. All are supposed to help you lose pounds and keep them off. Regardless of what your specific diet is, the basic premise of weight loss is that you are spending more energy than you are taking in. You should be getting daily exercise in conjunction with choosing healthy meals and cutting out any empty calories (such as soda, cookies, chips, etc.). Weight will slowly start to come off if you adjust your eating and exercise habits. Eventually, you will get down to the weight that you want to be, and as long as you keep your diet and exercise routines going, you will stay at a healthy weight for a long time to come.

The one problem that most people encounter is trying to find healthy diet food that they can continue to eat for sustained periods of time. Many people find one or two different healthy meals that they enjoy, but have difficult creating any sort of variety. They consistently eat the same few health food options, but eventually they get sick of eating the same things over and over again. A good idea is to have an assortment of healthy diet food options so that you will get some variety in your diet and be able to continue your diet for much longer than you had imagined.

One idea is to cook everything yourself. The problem with this is that it takes a lot of time to cook yourself a meal every time you want to eat. Also, having all the ingredients might not be easy or economical. If you do want to cook, you can do what my dad does: batch. Go ahead and cook yourself an entire week’s worth of meals in one day. Put them in some containers, freeze everything and then heat and serve when you want to eat. Another option is to go to the grocery store and start picking healthy pre-packaged diet meals. There should be a ton of options in your frozen food section. The only problem is that it can be expensive, you really have no idea what you are getting, and you don’t even know where to begin.
